- burn (sth) down: (phv) to destroy something, especially a building, by fire, or to be destroyed by fire: He tried to burn down the school by setting fire to papers on a noticeboard.




- carry sth out: phrasal verb [M] to do or complete something, especially that you have said you would do or that you have been told to do: Nigel is carrying out research on early Christian art. The hospital is carrying out tests to find out what's wrong with her. Our soldiers carried out a successful attack last night. It is hoped that the kidnappers will not carry out their threat to kill the hostages. Don't blame me, I'm only carrying out my orders/instructions.




- estate agent: UK noun [C] (US real estate agent or realtor) someone who works for an estate agency (= a business that arranges the selling, renting or management of homes, land and buildings for their owners).




- fate: noun1 [C usually singular] what happens to a particular person or thing, especially something final or negative, such as death or defeat: We want to decide our own fate. His fate is now in the hands of the jury. The disciples were terrified that they would suffer/meet the same fate as Jesus. 2 [U] a power that some people believe causes and controls all events, so that you cannot change or control the way things will happen: When we met again by chance in Cairo, I felt it must be fate. Fate has brought us together.




- plunge: verb [I or T; usually + adverb or preposition] to (cause someone or something to) move or fall suddenly and often a long way forward, down or into something: We ran down to the beach and plunged into the sea. The car went out of control and plunged over the cliff. Cook the peas by plunging them into boiling water. Niagara Falls plunges 55.5 metres. The fall in demand caused share prices to plunge. Our income has plunged dramatically.




- prone (TENDING): (adj) be prone to sth/do sth - tending to suffer from an illness or show a particular negative characteristic: I've always been prone to headaches. He was prone to depressions even as a teenager. She's prone to exaggerate, that's for sure.




- raffle: noun [C] an activity in which people buy numbered tickets, some of which are later chosen to win prizes, which is arranged in order to make money for a good social purpose: a raffle ticket/prizeI have never won anything in a raffle.




- rub off: phrasal verb INFORMAL If a quality or characteristic that someone has rubs off, other people begin to have it because they have been with that person and learnt it from them: His enthusiasm is starting to rub off on the rest of us.




- strap sth up: [M often passive] (US tape sth up) to wrap a leg, arm or other part of the body in a bandage (= strip of material for wrapping around injuries): He'd just injured himself playing football and his arm was strapped up.
